WEIGHT LOSS STORY: TO BEAT POSTPARTUM BLUES, WOMAN LOST 28 KILOS BY MONITORING DIET

Weight loss journey: Post the birth of her child, Vaishnavi Boora slipped into postpartum depression. She had gained many kilos, had to leave her job, take complete care of her baby and also run her household - all of this overwhelmed her. Her life had turned 360 degrees and she forgot to give herself time during that period. “The body undergoes a lot of changes post pregnancy and when I would look at myself in the mirror, I would feel a sense of shame,” she shares, adding that she would avoid meeting people, including her friends. Her misery became palpable by the day and that’s when her husband decided to take her to therapy. After some counseling sessions, the realisation dawned on Vaishnavi that she would need to do something to feel better and confident in her skin. She decided to shed off extra kilos to look and feel beautiful inside out. To her credit, she lost 28 kgs in a span of a year, bringing her weight down from 85 kgs to 57 kgs.

Diet she followed during her weight loss journey

Vaishnavi was clear on one thing and that was not to eliminate any food group from her diet completely. She included protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fat and fiber in her everyday diet. “What worked for me was eating in moderation. Besides, I completely eliminated fried food, maida and processed food from my diet,” she said. Never a fan of crash diets, she decided to do intermittent fasting from time to time to keep her overall health and weight in check. She would also sip on green tea, lemon water and coconut water through the day to stay hydrated. “Staying hydrated helps in curbing hanger pangs and also makes one feel energetic and light,” she shares.

Workout she followed during her weight loss journey

From doing strength training, running, going on long walks to swimming, Vaishnavi introduced all these things in her workout mix to lose weight. “It goes without saying that all these things help in losing weight, but it also helps in making one feel good about oneself. Exercising truly releases feel good hormones and that helped me beat postpartum blues in a major way,” she says. She shares how strength training helped with toning her body. “Post the birth of my child, I struggled with sagging skin a lot and strength training helped me build more muscles and get rid of loose skin,” she says.
