WHY YOU SHOULD (OR NOT) SWITCH TO MINERAL-RICH CELTIC SALT TO MANAGE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common health condition affecting many individuals in India and across the world. One of the leading causes of serious health risks such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems, it occurs when the constant high force of blood puts pressure on the walls of the arteries. Managing it often involves lifestyle changes, including dietary adjustments.

One dietary approach that has gained attention on social media is the use of Celtic salt as an alternative to regular table salt. Australian alternative health care promoter Barbara O'Neill strongly advocates switching to this salt for those suffering from high blood pressure. “Celtic salt has 82 minerals, it’s a hand-harvested sea salt, so the minerals in the celtic salt are in their balanced form,” she suggests.

So, should one switch to this mineral-rich salt?

Dr Srinivas Janam, internal medicine specialist at DHEE Hospitals, confirms that Celtic salt is known for its broad spectrum of trace minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which are less prevalent in table salt. “These minerals can play a role in heart health by helping to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow, potentially lowering blood pressure,” he says.

Additionally, unlike regular table salt, which primarily contains sodium chloride, he adds, the additional minerals in Celtic salt helps to balance the negative effects of sodium. For example, potassium helps to lessen the effects of sodium in the diet by aiding in sodium excretion through urine and helping relax blood vessel walls.

Potential health implications of consuming table salt

Manufacturing process concerns: Regular table salt often undergoes a refining process that can include the use of substances like bleach and anti-caking agents such as aluminum derivatives, according to Dr Janam, which some consumers might want to avoid due to potential health concerns.

Comparison with natural salts: Celtic and Himalayan salts are often marketed as being more natural, he states, containing a range of other minerals without the chemical additives found in table salt. These natural salts are touted for their purity and minimal processing, which preserves their mineral complexity.

Risks and considerations with Celtic salt

Dr Janam cautions, “Always consider discussing dietary changes with a healthcare provider, especially when managing conditions that could be affected by increased salt intake.” He adds the reasons why one should be careful while consuming celtic salt:

*Sodium content: Despite the beneficial minerals, Celtic salt still contains sodium, which can raise blood pressure when consumed in excess. Patients with hypertension or heart conditions should use Celtic salt as cautiously as table salt.

*Medication interactions: Individuals on blood pressure medications should monitor their salt intake carefully, as excessive sodium can counteract the effectiveness of certain antihypertensives.

*Medical advice: As with any dietary change, it is essential for individuals with health concerns or those on medication to consult healthcare professionals before making significant adjustments to their salt intake.
