Home remedies can work wonders. As such, when we chanced upon one on social media we wanted to find out about its effectiveness. And we must admit that we were surprised! According to Sonia Narang, a dietitian, the secret to good skin lies in your kitchen, and we must tell you that is it the most (expected yet) unbelievable combination.

In an Instagram post, Narang shared that tamarind coriander is a wonderful solution to tackle many skin woes. "Also known as imli-dhaniya paani, it is a refreshing and tangy drink made from tamarind pulp and fresh coriander leaves (or any leaves for flavour)".

She further shared that "tamarind contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, which is a fantastic skincare ingredient. "By incorporating tamarind water into your regime, fine lines and dark spots can be minimised," said Narang, adding that it is also rich in vitamins C and K that stimulate collagen production, prevent sun damage, and alleviate the effects of acne.

"It also contains a high amount of potassium bitartrate, malic, and tartaric acid that improves the digestive system and the gut health," said Narang. One can opt to sprinkle roasted cumin powder and black salt for added flavour.

But does it work?

We asked Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics the same question, and this is what she had to say.

Tamarind coriander water is a natural remedy that can work wonders for your skin. This rejuvenating concoction combines tamarind's tangy goodness with coriander's refreshing properties, resulting in a "powerful skin tonic".

"Tamarind is rich in antioxidants which help fight off free radicals, reducing signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines. It also contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that exfoliate the skin, promoting a smoother and more youthful complexion," said Dr Kapoor, adding that tamarind is also known for its skin brightening properties, helping to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Coriander, on the other hand, is packed with minerals, vitamins, and essential oils. Dr Kapoor elaborated that it has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help combat acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and prevent breakouts. "Coriander also acts as a natural toner, tightening pores and giving your skin a healthy glow," Dr Kapoor told indianexpress.com.

To make it:

*Soak tamarind in water

*Add coriander leaves (sweeten it with sugar or honey if desired)

Tamarind coriander water is a simple and effective natural remedy for achieving a healthier and more vibrant skin. "With its rich antioxidant and antibacterial properties, this skin tonic can help combat signs of ageing, acne, and dullness," said Dr Kapoor.

However, like everything else, caution is necessary to not go overboard with consumption. "A healthy diet and lifestyle will make more difference," said Dr Kapoor.
