Tomatoes are packed with nutritional benefits. They offer a wealth of health advantages due to their high antioxidant and vitamin C content, which bolsters the immune system. Experts suggest that tomatoes provide essential nutrients like vitamins A and B, and magnesium. "Lycopene in tomatoes is particularly effective at normalising blood pressure by enhancing the function of blood vessels, which helps in managing high blood pressure. Additionally, the potassium found in tomatoes also contributes to this blood pressure-lowering effect," said Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute.

Having said that, there are certain dos and don'ts when it comes to having tomato, which is a fruit and not a vegetable as is widely believed.

Dr Manisha Mishra, an Ayurveda physician, listed the dos and don'ts when it comes to eating tomatoes.

*Tomato is an acidic fruit and should not be had every day

*It should always be consumed in the cooked form

*Ensure to remove the seeds if you eat them raw.

*While consuming the everyday causes acidity, it can be applied to the skin daily for a glowing, youthful look, said Dr Mishra, in a conversation with actor Rajeshwari Sachdev.

What causes acidity?

Dr Meghraj Ingle, director and senior consultant, gastroenterology, Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai noted that acidity is usually caused by a range of factors, with diet playing a significant role. Unexpectedly, dieting or skipping meals can also lead to acidity as it disrupts the proper functioning of the digestive system. Furthermore, an unhealthy lifestyle characterised by irregular eating patterns and lack of physical activity can contribute to chronic acidity issues.

"Consuming acidic foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and spicy foods can trigger acidity in some individuals. Additionally, overeating or eating heavy meals just before bedtime can lead to acid reflux and heartburn, exacerbating the symptoms of acidity," said Dr Ingle.

Agreed Sushma, and said that tomatoes, known for their acidic nature, are recommended not to be consumed every day. "However, if you still wish to include them in your diet, opting for cooked tomatoes is a better choice. When consuming raw tomatoes, ensure to remove the seeds as they can exacerbate acidity issues," said Sushma.

This is not to forgo their consumption completely. "Beyond their antioxidant properties, tomatoes are high in fibre yet low in calories, making them an excellent choice for those looking to manage their weight. They promote a feeling of fullness and can lead to reduced calorie consumption, aiding in weight loss efforts," said Sushma.
